With the conclusion of Miss Universe Australia 2020 last October 28 came the crowning of Maria Thattil. She came out on top out of the 26 candidates that participated, and will be representing Australia at the Miss Universe 2020.
Due to restrictions from the pandemic, the entire event was hosted virtually at Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, Melbourne, Victoria. Maria Thattil’s crowning moment was presented by Piya Serrao, the reigning winner of Miss Universe 2019 who is also of Indian origin. The crown was then delivered to Maria two days later.
Who is Maria Thattil?
Maria Thattil is a 27-year old Australian national of Indian decent. Her parents moved to Melbourne before she was even born. Despite being born and raised as an Australian, the beauty queen hasn’t forgotten her roots by dedicating her success to forwarding her advocacies such as inclusion and breaking norms.
Even before being crowned as Miss Universe Australia, Maria Thattil has had a life close to celebrity status. She has her own YouTube channel where she posts videos of her lifestyle and makeup. Along with it, she hosts “MINDWITHME” series to inspire people around her, manifesting a woman of both beauty and compassion.
Breaking Barriers
Piya Serrao broke barriers for winning Miss Universe Australia. She proved that beauty is not specific to any form of origin that even women of different color can be the epitome of the definition of beauty. With how Maria Thattil followed her footsteps by being the second Indian-origin to win the pageant, it further materialized the concept of beauty among people of color and breaking norms.
Taking Things to Social Media
Despite the lockdown, Maria Thattil still found a way to celebrate her success by posting on social media, especially on Instagram. She created a series of posts thanking her supporters and her co-candidates whom she says have been very supportive of her every step of the way.
Maria Thattil is hopeful of the future that she will be able to perfectly represent Australia at the Miss Universe. As of the moment, it is too early for her to say her next steps towards working on to that goal. Nevertheless, she is looking forward to it and is personally prepared for the extensive journey ahead.
