There is this non-profit organization in India called Asha that helps Indians especially those slum dwellers to get out of poverty and improves their living. They are looking for programs and scholarships to help students from India have the chances to study abroad and enter huge universities.
When talking about studying abroad for Indians, Australia is always the best destination that comes up to their mind. According to a survey, every fifth Indian student you speak among the population that is planning to study abroad, has always Australia on their options. And one of the best Universities in Australia is University of Queensland in Brisbane.
Through Asha’s help, one student who grew up in the slums in Delhi got a chance to study internationally. This is with the partnership of Asha and The University of Queensland.
The UQ-India Equity Postgraduate Coursework Scholarship to study a Master of International Economics and Finance at UQ was awarded to Amritesh Kumar Maurya.
He shared that his dream is to work in the World Bank someday, and he was hoping that this scholarship may allow him to pursue that dream.
Mr Maurya said that he gave his heartfelt thanks to Chancellor Peter Varghese and others at The University of Queensland for giving him this wonderful opportunity. Growing up, he sees his father working in really harsh temperatures in their school garden while he was studying in an air-conditioned classroom. Because of that, this motivates him to study harder for his family.
Dr. Jessica Gallaghe, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement and Entrepreneurship) said that UQ’s partnership with Asha helps the young people in the slums of Delhi to access higher education and have a lot of great chances and opportunities for their future. This gave them hope that one day, they will live very successfully.
She also said that they are very glad and excited to welcome Mr. Maurya to UQ under this scholarship. This will help to lessen the perception barriers in regards to education around the world in spite of the circumstances of every person.
Mr. Maurya shared that when Dr. Kiran Martin, the founder and director of Asha visited the Kusumpur Pahari slum where he and his family lived, he was very happy to meet her for the first time.
He said that he got the wonderful opportunity to hear from Dr. Martin talks about how education can do for it wasn’t only changes one’s life, but also brings a huge change to the whole community.
He also shared how grateful he is that he cannot even express in words how thankful and glad he is to Dr. Martin for making him what he is today. The child from slums who never even expected to have the opportunity to study in an international prestigious university.
Asha’s founder and director Dr. Martin shared that she and the whole organization was very excited and happy to announce the scholarship to Mr. Maurya.
She said that, “We are committed to setting up Amritesh for success and hopefully many more students will follow.”
The UQ Scholarship will cover Mr Maurya’s full tuition fees, as well as an annual living stipend of $13,000, on-campus accommodation, overseas student health cover, a book allowance per semester and $1200 towards flights home at the end of each year of the program.
All of the expenses of Mr. Maurya such as the full tuition fee, the annual living allowance worth $13,000, the accommodation in the campus, the student health insurance, the every semester book allowance, and the back and forth flight tickets every end of the school year fully covered by The UQ Scholarship Program.
